Puerto Vallarta Launches Sea Turtle Nesting Season Preparations

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – As June approaches, the Municipal Government of Puerto Vallarta is preparing for the annual sea turtle nesting season, a crucial period for the Olive Ridley sea turtle. This significant conservation effort, led by the Directorate of Environmental Sustainability, is set to begin next month and continue through January 2026.

Each summer, thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles journey back to the very beaches where they were born in Puerto Vallarta to lay their eggs. These remarkable creatures can deposit hundreds of eggs, and without intervention, these precious nests are vulnerable to accidental damage from beachgoers or predation. To ensure the safety of these developing turtles, nests are carefully relocated to protected areas shortly after the eggs are laid.

Dr. Bartolo Cruz, Director of Environmental Sustainability, shared that preparatory activities are already underway at the Holi Beach hatchery. These include essential sand changes, a proactive measure to prevent the growth of fungi within the sea turtle nests, further safeguarding the delicate eggs.

While the precise number of nests for the upcoming season cannot be predicted, the arrival of sea turtles is anticipated across all of Puerto Vallarta’s beaches. Beyond direct protection, the Department of Environmental Sustainability will be actively engaging the community through environmental education campaigns.

Residents and visitors will also have the heartwarming opportunity to participate in the release of newly hatched sea turtles from the City Hall hatchery’s nests – an experience that highlights the beauty of local wildlife and the importance of conservation.

The Municipal Government encourages the community and visitors to take part in this meaningful initiative and contribute to the protection of this iconic marine species. Through collective effort, there is great optimism that this sea turtle season will be a resounding success, leading to effective and enduring protection for these magnificent creatures.
