Turtle Nesting and Releases in Full Swing in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – One of Puerto Vallarta’s most treasured natural events is once again underway. From late June through mid-December, sea turtles return to the sandy shores of Banderas Bay to nest, offering residents and visitors the chance to witness and support an extraordinary cycle of life.

The Olive Ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) is the most common nester in the region, but Leatherback, Black, and Hawksbill turtles also grace the bay’s beaches. Each species plays a vital role in the marine ecosystem, making their protection a priority for local authorities and conservation groups.

The Luis Munguía administration, through the Environmental Sustainability Directorate, is calling on the community to help protect sea turtles during this season. Guidelines include keeping at least 10 meters away from nesting turtles, avoiding flash photography, and never disturbing them while laying eggs. If a turtle is in danger, citizens can call 911 or 322-688-2368 for immediate assistance from trained personnel.

To protect the nests, the Municipal Departments of Environment and Ecology, together with marine biologists and volunteers, relocate the eggs to secure turtle camps where they are safely incubated until hatching. These camps not only boost survival rates but also give visitors the chance to learn about sea turtle conservation.

One of the most rewarding ways to take part is by joining a hatchling release. Public releases take place at Holi Beach every Monday through Wednesday at 6:30 pm, where people of all ages can help – or just watch – tiny turtles make their way to the ocean under the glow of the setting sun. The experience leaves a lasting impression and strengthens awareness of the importance of protecting endangered species.

By participating in these activities, visitors and locals alike contribute to the survival of sea turtles while enjoying a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with nature. This season reaffirms Puerto Vallarta’s commitment to preserving marine life and inspires all who take part to protect the natural wonders of the ocean.
