Subsidy Considered for Puerto Vallarta–Yelapa Ferry

Puerto Vallarta, México – Authorities in Jalisco are reviewing the possibility of subsidizing the maritime ferry that connects Puerto Vallarta with Yelapa, a move that could make the service more affordable for residents and visitors while strengthening regional transportation.

The proposal gained momentum after Miguel Tejeda Guillén, the entrepreneur behind the Vallarta ferry, suggested that a financial support system could reduce the current round-trip fare of 600 pesos. By lowering the cost for passengers, the project seeks to increase demand and provide a more accessible alternative for navigating the scenic coastline of Banderas Bay.

Jalisco’s Secretary of Tourism, Michelle Friedman Hirsch, expressed openness to the idea, noting that state and municipal governments are prepared to evaluate various support mechanisms. Beyond just the Yelapa route, officials are looking at the possibility of expanding maritime paths to other destinations throughout Banderas Bay, potentially reaching into neighboring Nayarit. These expanded routes would create a more integrated transportation network for the entire Banderas Bay area.

For these projects to succeed over the long term, Friedman Hirsch emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach. Success relies on the combined efforts of federal, state, and local agencies, alongside community acceptance and media visibility. While any financial plan must strictly adhere to current legal frameworks, the primary focus remains on finding sustainable solutions that promote regional mobility.

As discussions continue, the focus remains on the positive impact that improved maritime access will have on local tourism and daily commutes. By exploring these innovative funding options, authorities hope to provide a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective way for everyone to enjoy the unique beauty of the Pacific coast.
