Support Approved for 5 de Diciembre Market Vendors

The Puerto Vallarta City Council has unanimously approved urgent actions to support vendors affected by recent fires at the 5 de Diciembre Municipal Market and to address long-standing electrical issues that contributed to the incidents.

Officials noted that the market’s electrical system has not undergone major maintenance in more than three decades, creating safety concerns that were brought into focus after the recent fires disrupted operations for several vendors.

Mayor Luis Munguía emphasized that the city is responding with responsibility and care, focusing both on immediate assistance for affected vendors and long-term preventive measures to improve safety within this important community marketplace.

Located on San Salvador Street, the 5 de Diciembre Municipal Market is known for offering fresh fruits and vegetables, locally sourced meats, and seafood brought in daily from nearby coastal waters. The market remains a vital hub for residents seeking quality products and supporting local businesses.

The initiative, introduced by City Council members and formally presented by Councilor Marcia Bañuelos, calls for a full inspection of the market’s electrical infrastructure. Plans include modernizing the system and replacing outdated components as needed to ensure safe, reliable service that meets current standards.

According to Daniel Alarcón, the city’s Deputy Director of Markets, immediate safety measures were put into place following the fires to stabilize operations. Misael López Muro, Director of Civil Protection and Firefighters, confirmed that technical assessments are already underway to identify the root causes of the electrical problems and determine the necessary repairs.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, city leaders are also working to provide direct financial assistance to the affected vendors. A second proposal introduced by the mayor and Councilor Bañuelos recommends providing 30,000 pesos to each of the 7 vendors impacted by the fires. The measure has been referred to City Council committees for further review and approval.

Vendors attended the council session and expressed appreciation for the swift response and support from local officials. Many acknowledged the importance of the planned improvements, noting that safer facilities will help protect their businesses and ensure the continued success of the market.

Through these coordinated efforts, city officials aim to restore full operations at the 5 de Diciembre Market while strengthening safety standards for the future, helping preserve a long-standing marketplace that plays a key role in Puerto Vallarta’s daily life and local economy.
