2nd Annual Carrera por la Casquito de Vallarta Set for May 17th

Puerto Vallarta is gearing up for a meaningful athletic event designed to safeguard one of its most unique natural treasures. Municipal authorities and local organizers recently gathered to announce the second edition of the 5K Race and Environmental Fair, a community movement dedicated to the protection of the Casquito de Vallarta mud turtle.

This specific turtle, scientifically known as Kinosternon vogti, holds a special place in the region’s heritage because it is found nowhere else on Earth. Discovered by researchers in 2018, these small creatures are often referred to as “helmet turtles” due to the distinctive shape of their shells. They are easily identified by colorful markings on their noses – yellow for males and brown for females – and typically grow to a modest length of 10 to 15 centimeters.

Despite their recent discovery, these turtles face an urgent challenge. Their natural habitat in the freshwater lagoons and floodplains of Puerto Vallarta has decreased significantly over the years, shrinking from 300 square kilometers to just 20 square kilometers. This fragmentation of the land has placed the species at a high risk of extinction within the next few years, making immediate conservation efforts essential.

In response, the Municipal Government has formed strategic alliances with environmental organizations to strengthen local ecosystems. A primary focus of these efforts is the Tomasa Lagoon in the Villas Universidad neighborhood. This area is a vital sanctuary for biodiversity, providing a home not only for the mud turtle but also for river crocodiles, iguanas, opossums, and various migratory birds.

The upcoming race serves as a bridge between fitness and environmental stewardship. Scheduled for Sunday, May 17th, the event will begin at 7:00 am at the Agustín Flores Contreras Stadium. Participants can register through the Estudiantes Conservando la Naturaleza website for a fee of 450 pesos.

Every runner who crosses the start line contributes directly to the survival of the species. The funds raised from the event are earmarked for critical surveillance and monitoring programs. These resources also support ongoing cleaning processes and restoration projects at Laguna Tomasa, ensuring that this rare turtle and its fellow inhabitants have a healthy environment in which to thrive for generations to come.
