Purr Project Vallarta May News

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Here’s the latest news from PuRR Project, a non-profit, no-kill feline shelter located just north of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico that provides homeless cats and kittens a recuperative stay with the ultimate goal of adopting them out to loving homes sterilized, vaccinated and disease free.

SHELTER UPDATE

As of last week we had 26 kitties in the nursery plus 7 in foster care. We have no idea at this time when we may be able to start up adoptions again at PetCo. Work continues on the renovation of the Acclimation Casita, which was contracted and paid for by a donor before the pandemic hit. Our annual Volunteer Spring Cleaning was canceled, but José, Hilda and Carlos are keeping everything in good shape. Volunteers are there weekly to deliver supplies and tend to any medical emergencies. We WILL make it through this difficult time!

ADOPTION UPDATES

BILLY
Billy was a “Greeter” back in March of 2010 when Brenda Gill first visited the shelter… and soon decided to adopt him! He now travels between winters in Puerto Vallarta and summers in Lake Tahoe, CA. His favorite things are having his tummy rubbed and breakfast, lunch and dinner, which he eats just fine with his two teeth.

LOKI
Adopted in March of 2013 by Connie Jones, Loki now lives near Philadelphia. He recently had his 7th birthday celebration… almost 20 pounds of pure love! He enjoys playing with Connie’s granddaughters, Peyton and Elliot, and lets them dress him up and push him in his stroller. The girls say PuRR cats are the best!

MISHA
Misha was Ms. December in our 2015 Calendar. Adopted from Plaza Marina in 2013 by Victor & Tatiana Domilovskiy of Vancouver, Victor writes: “Misha is a role model for obeying self-isolation rules since she has 6.5 years of experience of staying indoors. She is bad in keeping social distance though… always sitting on me!”

BUDDY
Buddy was adopted at Plaza Marina on August of 2017 by Sara Alexander on a trial basis to see if he could bond with her four Cocker Spaniels… and it was obviously a great success! The family lives here in Puerto Vallarta and also includes cat “Ginger” and more recently… five ferrets! Sara reports that Buddy is great friends with everyone and even naps with the ferrets.

ENZO
Enzo is a very lucky kitty!! He was adopted by Nancy and John Martin at the Petco Adoption Center on March 21. We were literally in the process of shutting down the center in compliance with the new Stay At Home mandate in Jalisco when Nancy rushed in looking for a kitten. Along with their dog Milo, the family is complete… for now!

FOSTERING KITTENS

URSULA & ULA
Thanks to Cathy Case of Nuevo Vallarta for fostering Tessa, Ursula & Ula during this crisis when our vet has been unable to make twice-weekly visits to the shelter. Little Ursula and Ula were born at the shelter within hours of Mama being dumped there. Tessa needed a human touch to make her more adoptable. As the former director of a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Southern California, Cathy has lots of experience in baby animals… though mostly opossums & raccoons! She is also mom to three PuRR kittens she has adopted.

ANGEL & CONCHA
Monica Pencz is also mom to three PuRR kitties… along with three others cats… back at home in Chicago. She has also fostered a number of kittens there, while pursuing her studies as a vet tech, so has lots of experience. While sheltering-in-place at her condo here in Vallarta, she was happy to take two of our tiny ones to foster. Angel and Concha are in good hands!

Hopefully these adorable kittens in foster will be ready for Forever Homes by the time we are able to re-open the Adoption Center in Petco.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS CANCELLED

In view of the current situation, we had to cancel the last two Shelter Tours, Kitty BINGO and the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at Daiquiri Dick’s and May 9 Garage Sale we had planned. The Saturday Adoption Booth at Daiquiri Dick’s and weekend adoptions at PetCo have been suspended until further notice.

With all fundraising events cancelled, donations are the only source of funding to provide food, shelter and veterinary care for the 200+ cats & kittens in residence at PuRR Project. Any donation, large or small, will be welcomed to help us get through what will be a difficult summer. Click HERE to make a donation today.
