Tropicasa Vallarta Guide to Tequila Mastery

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – If you live in Puerto Vallarta, you’ll have plenty of friends and family wanting to pay you a visit. And when they arrive, you’ll want to have some local expert knowledge about Tequila, of course, because when it comes to this spirit of Mexico, location is everything.

Much like Champagne, for Tequila to earn its name, it must be distilled in the region of Tequila, right here in Puerto Vallarta’s sunny home state of Jalisco. The region is well-suited to grow the key component of Tequila, the blue agave plant, and Mexican law states that Tequila must be produced only in Jalisco to get the stamp of approval and ensure the process, from start to finish, is overseen by local harvesters rooted in the country’s rich history of distilling Tequila.

Jalisco produces five types of Tequila determined by their color and aging periods. These five tequilas offer something to everyone, whether you’re enjoying a Margarita with friends and family, or prefer sipping tequila with traditional Mexican cuisine to highlight the rich and colorful flavors. Here are the five distinctions:

TEQUILA BLANCO

Bottled no longer that 60 days after distillation, this unaged Tequila is the spirit at its essence, with no oak flavor or aging, just the pure taste of the agave. A higher end bottle can be used for sipping, while less expensive bottles are great for cocktails.

TEQUILA JOVEN

This is a Tequila Blanco blended with aged tequilas, this tequila produces a rich, golden hue and has a slightly more mixed flavor profile. Joven Tequila is generally used for cocktails.

TEQUILA REPOSADO

Typically aged in oak barrels from 2 months to a full year, this Tequila does double duty as a sipping drink and for mixed drinks. Reposado is often a favorite for Margaritas because it has a slightly sweeter flavor.

TEQUILA ANEJO

Put down the mixers! This top shelf Tequila is aged from 1-3 years in oak barrels and made for sipping to enjoy the deep agave flavors and rich aroma gained from the aging process.

EXTRA ANEJO

The premium of all Tequila, to qualify for this distinction, the Tequila must be aged longer than three years. Bottles of this caliber are appreciated by Tequila aficionados with its high-end quality.

Now you’re ready to stock the bar in your Puerto Vallarta home or impress friends and visitors by talking about Tequila like a local. And remember, the best Tequila is always the one you personally prefer.
