Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – In late May, Puerto Vallarta earned a major international honor by being named a Tree City of the World, a testament to the dedicated efforts of its community to nurture and expand its urban forests. This significant achievement was celebrated last week at the World Tree City International Forum held in San Luis Potosí, where Mayor Luis Munguía and his Environmental Sustainability team accepted the prestigious award.
This marks the first time Puerto Vallarta has received such a distinguished honor, which highlights the successful partnership between the municipal government, under Mayor Munguía’s leadership, and various civil society groups. Their combined initiatives have been instrumental in safeguarding and enhancing the city’s green spaces.
The forum in San Luis Potosí gathered cities from across Mexico that have also been recognized for their commitment to urban tree care. Representing Puerto Vallarta were Mayor Luis Munguía, Dr. Bartolo Cruz, Director of Environmental Sustainability, Tahamara Esquivel, Coordinator of the Arboriculture Program, and Laura Ramírez, Head of Environment.
During the ceremony, Mayor Munguía expressed gratitude for the collective efforts of Puerto Vallarta’s residents, whose dedication made this recognition possible. He also extended his thanks to the event organizers, including San Luis Potosí Mayor Enrique Galindo, along with representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Arbor Day Foundation, and Reforestamos México.
Mayor Munguía emphasized that this award is more than just a recognition; it’s a renewed commitment to continue the vital work of protecting and preserving the city’s trees.
Looking ahead, Puerto Vallarta is set to host the Tree Cities of the World 2025 awards ceremony in 2026. This upcoming event will provide a unique opportunity to shape public policies that encourage the sustainable management of urban trees globally, further solidifying Puerto Vallarta’s role as a leader in environmental stewardship.
This recognition is an important achievement for our city and a significant step toward a more sustainable future.
