Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico – Tuesday morning marked a milestone for Jalisco as the state received its initial batch of 10,000 Spikevax vaccines against COVID-19 from Laboratorios Moderna. Governor Enrique Alfaro’s recent announcement came to fruition, as the vaccines, acquired through state resources, are to be administered free of charge to vulnerable groups without social security across all regions of the state.
Supervising the arrival and safekeeping of the vaccines, Secretary of Health in the State of Jalisco, Fernando Petersen Aranguren, expressed his satisfaction. “Congratulations to Jalisco,” he exclaimed, emphasizing the state’s pioneering effort to independently protect families from the virus. “We are prioritizing vulnerable groups that need our support,” added the head of the Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ).
Petersen Aranguren confirmed that the vaccination drive for vulnerable groups commenced on January 17. Health brigades started by administering vaccines in shelters for the elderly, children and adolescents. Subsequent weeks will see the inclusion of pregnant women and individuals with various health conditions, such as kidney diseases, organ transplants, active or recurrent cancer, and HIV.
The vaccination campaign for vulnerable groups in 2024 is scheduled to run through March. To participate, residents are encouraged to register on the state platform of the Jalisco Vaccination Model. The Secretary of Health invited the public to check the SSJ website and social media for information on vaccine locations and schedules across the thirteen health regions in the state.
In a final call for community involvement, Petersen Aranguren urged residents to share this crucial information, emphasizing the collective responsibility to work in solidarity for the health of Jalisco’s families.
