Puerto Vallarta Prepares as 2025 Hurricane Season Approaches

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – The 2025 Pacific hurricane season officially begins on May 15 and runs through November 30, with forecasts suggesting it may be more active than usual. In the eastern Pacific region, which includes Mexico’s Pacific coast, meteorologists are expecting around 18 named storms this year. Of these, ten are forecast to become hurricanes, with four reaching major hurricane strength – Category 3 or higher.

These predictions are based on several climate indicators, including the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is expected to remain in a neutral phase. This means conditions could support various levels of storm activity, with other climate factors playing important roles in the formation and strength of tropical systems.

While the number of storms may rise, it’s not yet clear how many will directly affect Mexico’s coastline. Fortunately for Puerto Vallarta, its location offers a natural layer of protection. Nestled deep inside Banderas Bay and shielded by the Sierra Madre mountains, the city is often spared the brunt of major storms.

Still, local authorities are taking no chances. In preparation for the season, Puerto Vallarta’s Civil Protection and Fire Department, led by Engineer Misael López Muro under the direction of Mayor Luis Munguía, began inspections of the city’s temporary shelters back in February. These proactive efforts are part of a broader plan to ensure the community is ready for any potential weather emergencies.

Officials also encourage residents to take key steps to stay safe:

• Stay informed by following updates from official sources like Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN) and Civil Protection alerts.
• Secure your home by repairing or reinforcing areas vulnerable to wind or water damage.
• Know your evacuation routes and the locations of nearby shelters, especially if you live in low-lying or flood-prone areas.
• Prepare an emergency kit with essentials such as drinking water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, and first aid supplies.

Though forecasts suggest an above-average season, Puerto Vallarta’s natural defenses and strong local leadership provide reassurance. With preparedness and awareness, residents and visitors alike can enjoy the months ahead with more confidence.
