Puerto Vallarta Leads Mexico’s Sustainable Tourism Movement

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Puerto Vallarta is redefining what it means to be a world-class destination by putting environmental stewardship at the core of its tourism model. During Tourism Week 2025, the conference “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation” showcased the city’s growing leadership in eco-conscious development, with industry experts and officials aligning their efforts with the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s sustainability goals.

Central to this progress is the hotel sector’s commitment to achieving globally recognized certifications. Puerto Vallarta now stands out as a national leader in adopting programs that reward genuine environmental responsibility. Hotels across the region are embracing frameworks like EarthCheck, which measures performance in areas such as energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste management, as well as Mexico’s own Distintivo S program. Many are also earning prestigious Green Globe certifications, demonstrating consistent, third-party verified reductions in emissions and operational costs.

The State of Jalisco is complementing these efforts through initiatives like the Voluntary Environmental Compliance Program (PCAV), led by SEMADET. This program encourages businesses to seek environmental audits voluntarily, offering guidance and official recognition for those that meet or exceed standards. It promotes a mindset of continuous improvement and long-term sustainability among tourism operators.

The results are tangible. Certified hotels are reporting improved resource management and stronger partnerships with local communities. Beyond urban areas, sustainability initiatives extend to Puerto Vallarta’s surrounding ecosystems.

Projects such as Guardianes de la Bahía at Los Arcos de Mismaloya continue to protect marine biodiversity, while Canopy River Park has transformed a former logging site into a model of eco-adventure and community-driven conservation.

Alejandra Cornejo, Puerto Vallarta’s Director of Tourism, summed up the city’s vision: “We are committed to positioning Puerto Vallarta as a benchmark – a destination that is inclusive, resilient, and deeply responsible. The long-term prosperity of our community rests on balancing economic development with the preservation of our natural and cultural beauty.”

Puerto Vallarta’s message to the global tourism community is clear – sustainability is not a trend but a lasting commitment, shaping a greener, more responsible future for generations to come.
