Successful Tsunami Drill Highlights Puerto Vallarta’s Preparedness

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – More than 1,300 people safely evacuated coastal and high-risk areas on Tuesday as part of the 2025 Tsunami Drill, a regional emergency preparedness exercise aimed at strengthening response capacity in case of a real event.

The drill was a broad, community-wide effort, with active participation from various sectors. Six downtown schools joined the effort, alongside municipal government personnel and representatives from nine local businesses and condominiums. Participants smoothly and efficiently followed established evacuation protocols, showcasing excellent coordination. To ensure the rapid and safe flow of evacuees, a section of Juárez Street, between Guerrero and Iturbide, was temporarily closed during the exercise.

Key city officials highlighted the crucial role of preparedness and collaboration. Councilwoman Laurel Carrillo Ventura, chair of the Municipal Commission for Civil Protection, Firefighters, Comprehensive Risk Management, and Resilience, highlighted the importance of public awareness and coordination among institutions. “It is fundamental to stay informed and work together so that we can respond effectively to emergencies,” she stated.

Misael López Muro, the Director of Civil Protection and Firefighters for Puerto Vallarta, echoed this sentiment. He noted that the exercise aligns with Mayor Luis Munguía’s directive to foster a stronger culture of civil protection in the city. By encouraging citizen participation and preparation for a potential tsunami, these drills not only safeguard the well-being of the population but also significantly improve the capacity of institutional responses.

The success of the drill underscored Puerto Vallarta’s ongoing commitment to safety, prevention, and teamwork among authorities, schools, and residents.
