Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Everybody seems to love The Beatles and, at the January 6 opening of “Imagine: The Amazing Music of The Beatles” at Nacho Daddy, everybody in the audience seemed to love Amy Armstrong.
The evening began with Piel Canela PV approaching the stage blaring firm Latin guitar-playing as they took their places. They then called Amy to the stage, and she sashayed down the aisle singing “Ob-la-di ob-la-da, life goes on…” getting this fun-filled evening of classic Beatles music with Latin touches and Amy’s signature ‘off the cuff’ comedy off to a glorious start.
Fernando Gonzalez, lead acoustic guitarist, formed Piel Canela PV and the band has quickly moved into the upper echelon of local Latin bands. Fellow band members are Gary Flores Morales on percussion, the superbly talented electric bass guitarist Jose “Pepe” Galvan, and Alberto “Mimi” Ramirez on acoustic and electric guitars. Luis Rascón was not available to play on opening night.
Amy has been struggling with illness but, on opening night, her spirits flew high and her smile enticed everyone into a good time. Her humor fills the venue. One after another, a funny story or bite of life in Mexico induced chuckles and applause from the audience. She reminded the attendees that they should not be shocked by any off-color humor since “They read the poster, which states I have the mouth of the sailor.”
“Here Comes The Sun” was delivered clearly and totally on-key. Amy took this beloved classic tune using her own interpretation. She called upon Bill Withers for his composition “Ain’t No Sunshine,” to which Amy swung back and forth with her ‘electric’ band. The sound was stirring and rooted in one’s soul.
After a brief break, Piel Canela kicked off the ongoing show with “Volare” [I’ll fly, fly, fly]. They brought out Amy for more songs and her infectious candor and laughter. She chatted nonchalantly about the chemo, the pain, the loss of hair and weight, but smiled through it all, knowing in her heart that all will be quite well someday. A soft yet stunning rendition of Black Bird – “Take these broken wings and learn to fly” summarized her outlook on life and hope in the air.
The band pulled out the plugs with a phenomenal “Come Together”. Guitars blared, each man took solo shots and in the end, everyone was united. A bold, emphatic “Eleanor Rigby” revealed anger in the words illuminating how she was so lonely and died alone. “All the lonely people. Where do they all come from?” Amy beseeched everyone here to live their dreams, do what they want, with whom and how.
She took us underwater sailing in a “Yellow Submarine”. Full speed ahead, Amy warbled and she was followed by all her friends. A perfect song for Armstrong, joyous and fun, is Harry Styles’ hit tune “Watermelon Sugar [High]”. The five on stage smoothly rocked that number.
Amy seemed eager to touch upon the jazz great Ella Fitzgerald and delved deep into “Summertime.” Her version was compassionate and deeply touching. Amy’s voice is so addictive. She is one of the most on-point pure performers in Puerto Vallarta.
The evening ultimately reached an ending and she launched into the show’s theme song, “Imagine.” Amy portrayed the lyrics as relevant in the difficult times in which we live. The message was clear: “Imagine all the people living life in peace. I hope someday you will join us, and the world will live as one.”
