An Ancient Mayan City has been Unearthed in Southern Mexico

A team of researchers and archaeologists recently discovered a monumental Ancient Mayan city within the Balamkú ecological reserve in the state of Campeche, around 1,100km from Mexico City, which they've named Ocomtún ('stone column' in Yucatec Mayan), due to the numerous cylindrical stone pillars scattered throughout the site.

17th-Century Church Emerges from Reservoir in Chiapas, Mexico

A 17th-century church in Chiapas that has been covered by water since 1966 has once again shown its façade. The Temple of Quechula emerged after drought caused water levels to drop in the Nezahualcóyotl reservoir on the Grijalva river. Tourists are flocking to the site to catch a glimpse before it disappears beneath the water again.

On June 16, Jalisco celebrated its first bicentennial as a free and sovereign state, and the Jalisco Ministry of Culture decided to commemorate the occasion with public art. Mexico’s Modelo the Best-Selling Beer in the United States

Mexico's Modelo became the best-selling brand of beer in the U.S. in May, with an 8.4% share of the market. Bud Light fell from the top spot for the first time in nearly two decades after the beer's owner, Anheuser-Busch, became embroiled in controversy. Sales of Modelo Especial grew 12.2% in the last month, while sales of Bud Light fell 7.3%.

Mexican Film Production Broke Records Again in 2022

Mexico produced more films than ever before last year, despite an increasingly difficult financing environment. In its Statistical Yearbook of Mexican Cinema, the Mexican Institute of Cinematography recorded 258 Mexican feature films produced in 2022, surpassing the previous record set in 2021.

Mexico Establishes New Rules for Employees Who Work From Home

Mexico’s Labor Department on Friday issued new regulations to guarantee the safety and wellbeing of remote workers. The new regulations establish, among other things, that employees who work from home cannot be paid less than those who go to an office. It also requires employers to provide tools and cover some costs related to teleworking.

Mexico Awarded 108 Blue Flags for the 2023-2024 Season

Mexico now has 108 locations that can fly the Blue Flag environmental designation, putting the country in first place on the American continent and among the top 10 in the world for the most beaches, marinas and boats that qualified for the 2023-2024 season. Six of these Blue Flag certifications were awarded to beaches in Puerto Vallarta.

Vaquita Sightings on International Expedition Inspire Hope

Against all odds, Mexico’s endangered vaquita porpoises are holding on in their habitat in the Gulf of California, according to a new research expedition report released Wednesday. Experts on the expedition, which took place May 10-26, estimate they saw from 10 to 13 of the tiny, shy, elusive porpoises during nearly two weeks of sailing.
