Jalisco’s New Energy Agency Aims for Sustainability and Growth

Jalisco’s New Energy Agency Aims for Sustainability and Growth

The Government of Jalisco has taken a significant step toward securing a sustainable future by establishing the Secretariat of Sustainable Energy Development (SEDES). Officially operational as of January 1, this new agency aims to ensure a clean, reliable energy supply – a critical factor in fostering business competitiveness during the ongoing energy transition.

To achieve its ambitious goals, SEDES has developed a Sustainable Energy Development Plan with 10 key initiatives. These include accelerating the shift to renewable energy, enhancing energy infrastructure, and implementing an Energy Efficiency Plan for the state and its municipalities. The agency will also promote innovation and foster collaboration between public and private sectors to create a robust environment for business growth.

Manuel Herrera Vega, head of SEDES, emphasized the critical role energy sustainability plays in attracting investments, especially in fast-evolving industries like electromobility and artificial intelligence. He revealed that Jalisco is already moving forward with 20 renewable energy projects valued at over $2 billion.

One of the agency’s boldest goals is to ensure that, by the end of the current administration, 60% of the energy consumed in Jalisco will be locally produced from renewable sources. Currently, only 30% of the state’s energy is generated within its borders, with a similar percentage coming from renewable sources.

Herrera Vega underscored the broader benefits of this transition, stating, “Having a sustainable and competitive energy supply will not only attract new investments but also create more and better jobs for the local population.”

In addition to promoting renewable energy, SEDES plans to tackle energy poverty and introduce incentives for energy efficiency. Through collaboration with federal entities such as the Ministry of Energy and Semarnat, Jalisco is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable development, paving the way for a greener, more prosperous future.
