Mexico Receives 1st Sinovac Shipment

Mexico City – The 200,000 anti-Covid vaccines from the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac, which arrived in Mexico on Saturday, will be applied in their entirety to people over 60 years old who live in Ecatepec, State of Mexico, reported José Luis Alomía Zegarra, the Ministry of Health’s general director of Epidemiology.

During the Daily Coronavirus Report, he detailed that the criteria that were taken into account to make that decision were population density, which represents a risk to continue with the transmission of the virus; as well as the number of deaths, as he recalled that Ecatepec is a municipality with a significant mortality and fatality rate.

He said that social conditions and marginalization were also considered, which imply difficulties in accessing health care.

Alomía Zegarra explained that Ecatepec is the second most populated municipality in Mexico and the municipality with the largest number of people living in poverty and extreme poverty, and that its population of older adults is greater than 200,000 people based on data from the Council National Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval).

According to Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, the 200,00 doses of Sinovac that arrived at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) on Saturday were the first shipment of 10 million doses under the country’s contractual arrangement with the Chinese company.

The Ssa official said that so far 1,689,185 biological agents have been applied against Covid-19, but only 453,055 people have received the two necessary doses of the Pfizer vaccine to achieve immunity.

Last Monday Mexico began the second phase of the vaccination plan with the immunization of adults over 60 years of age with AstraZeneca vaccines.

The country has commitments for 34.4 million doses of the American Pfizer vaccine, 79.4 million of the British AstraZeneca, 35 million of the Chinese CanSino, 24 million of the Russian Sputnik V, 10 million of the Chinese Sinovac and 51.4 from the World Health Organization’s COVAX platform.
