Mexico City – The prestigious Sundance Film Festival, known for showcasing independent cinema, is coming to Mexico City for the first time. This collaboration between the Sundance Institute and Cinépolis, Mexico’s largest cinema chain, aims to bridge the gap between international independent filmmakers and Mexican audiences.
Held annually in Park City, Utah, the Sundance Film Festival is a major platform for emerging filmmakers. The 2024 edition took place in January, but a selection of the year’s best films will be screened in Mexico City from April 25 to 28.
Curation of the films to be shown currently rests in the hands of the team led by Kim Yutani, the Director of Programming, and is overseen by Eugene Hernández, director of the Sundance Film Festival and Public Programming.
“We can’t wait to bring a selection of this year’s program to Mexico City! We have such a rich history of exhibiting and supporting artists and their works, from Mexico and throughout Latin America, that we know that this first Sundance Film Festival CDMX will be enthusiastically received this spring by the city’s vibrant film audience, artists and film industry,” said Hernández.
The event will extend beyond screenings, featuring industry panels, discussions, and red carpets. Filmmakers involved in the selected films are expected to attend, fostering dialogue and interaction between the film community and the public.
This partnership marks a significant moment for Mexico’s film scene. Cinépolis CEO Alejandro Ramírez highlights Mexico City’s status as a cinematographic hub, but acknowledges the limited number of film festivals throughout the year. The Sundance Film Festival CDMX aims to fill this void and become a recurring event for the city’s vibrant film scene.
