Puerto Vallarta is set to celebrate its upcoming anniversary with a special musical performance that highlights both regional history and youthful artistry. On Sunday, May 31st, the Mariachi Infantil de Tecolotlán will take the stage for a free public concert along the city’s famous Malecón boardwalk.
Scheduled for 7:00 pm, the event will take place at the Malecón Lighthouse, offering attendees a scenic backdrop for an evening of traditional Mexican music. The performance adds a youthful energy to the city’s broader anniversary lineup, which already features a variety of cultural exhibitions, family activities, and artistic events designed to bring the community together.
The visiting youth ensemble travels from Tecolotlán, a Jalisco municipality with deep roots in the evolution of mariachi music. The town is closely tied to the legacy of Cirilo Marmolejo, a pioneering figure who spent his formative years there. Growing up in Tecolotlán, Marmolejo began his musical journey playing the vihuela – a high-pitched, five-string guitar – within his family’s ensemble, which proudly carried the town’s name.
Historians credit Marmolejo with introducing several transformative elements that shaped modern mariachi. During the 1920s, he helped professionalize the genre by organizing some of its very first formal audio recordings. He is also widely recognized for introducing the trumpet to the traditional lineup and popularizing the iconic charro suit as the standard attire for performances.
By hosting this talented youth group, Puerto Vallarta honors these foundational musical traditions while giving a new generation of musicians a prominent stage to share their craft.
