Hearts for Arts Nayarit Presents: Chalk Art Walk 2024

Bucerías, Nayarit – Hearts for Arts, Nayarit is excited to announce the 2024 Bucerías Chalk Art Walk! Themed, “Heart of the Huichol,” this year’s Chalk Art Walk is scheduled for February 20, 21 & 22, 2024. Held in the heart of the Golden Zone on Calle Lázaro Cárdenas, the three day Festival brings together more than 40 professional artists from around the world to showcase their skills through chalk artworks created directly on the street.

Chalk Art, or Madonarri, is a unique, temporary art form that is at once both a performing and visual art. Called “Madonnari” in Italy because artists originally recreated images of the Madonna, the art form can be traced to the sixteenth century. When itinerant artists working on large cathedrals completed their jobs, they found other ways to make a living by recreating paintings from the churches on the pavement.

Aware of festivals and holy days, they traveled across provinces and towns, joining the festivities and making a living from observers who would throw coins if they approved of the work. Many Madonnari were folk artists who created images with simple materials like tiles, coal, and chalk. Others, such as El Greco, went on to become household names. Over time, the chalk art form has spread and evolved around the world.

At the Bucerías Chalk Art Walk, you’ll have the opportunity to see the artists in action, watching the incredible artworks materialize over three days. From intricate designs to dazzling colors, there is something to inspire everyone!

The Chalk Art Walk also features local vendors, restaurants, and charities, providing opportunities to support the community by shopping and eating local, while raising awareness about the nonprofit organizations who provide important services to our area.
