Puerto Vallarta Hosts Three-Day World Theater Day Celebration

Puerto Vallarta is set to celebrate World Theater Day with an exciting three-day performing arts program from March 27 to 29.

Organized by the PV Performing Arts Collective with support from the local government, the event will bring together independent theater companies, cultural leaders, and art enthusiasts for a showcase of talent and creativity.

The celebration kicks off on March 27 with the play Este era un Rey (This Was a King) at 8:00 pm in the Cuale Cultural Center auditorium. Directed by maestro Alberto Fabián Sahagún Orozco, this adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear blends fiction with personal storytelling for an intimate and moving performance. Admission is free, allowing the community to experience high-quality theater firsthand.

Beyond this feature presentation, the program includes an array of performances such as ¡Al Aire Lola!, Chingue a su Madre el Minimo, and Que no se culpe a nadie de mi muerte, alongside the History of Theater in Jalisco conference and the collaborative production Teatro en Versiones. These events will take place at various venues, including Plataforma 322 and El Rey de Oros, with participation from independent theater groups that form the PV Performing Arts Collective.

Juan Pablo Hernández, president of the collective, highlighted that this marks the group’s first official event, signifying a new chapter for Puerto Vallarta’s theater scene. Vice President Soledad García emphasized the importance of improving conditions for the local theater industry, advocating for more performance spaces and long-term cultural policies.

Their efforts are backed by Councilwoman María Laurel Carrillo and Deputy Director of Economic Promotion and Tourism Miguel Arturo Meza, who recognize culture as an essential pillar of Puerto Vallarta’s tourism appeal. Supporting local talent not only enriches the city’s artistic landscape but also strengthens its identity as a destination for cultural experiences.

This celebration underscores theater’s role in society, not just as entertainment but as a powerful force for social connection and transformation. With this initiative, Puerto Vallarta reaffirms its dedication to the arts and cements its reputation as a thriving hub for performing arts.
