Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, México – The ninth Surfcasting Vallarta shore fishing tournament is set to reel in anglers once again on May 3, bringing excitement and friendly competition to the shoreline of Puerto Vallarta.
Organized by the city council through the Department of Tourism and Economic Development, Deportes Gutiérrez Rizo, and the Surfcasting Vallarta fishing group, the tournament invites sport fishing enthusiasts of all skill levels to take part in this popular annual tradition.
Fishing Along Iconic Shores

The competition will run from 6:30 am to 12:00 pm, with participants casting their lines along a scenic stretch of coastline. Fishing will take place from the Malecón Beach area in front of McDonald’s on the Puerto Vallarta Malecón down to Cuates y Cuetes on Playa de los Muertos, just north of the pier.
Anglers will compete to catch the heaviest fish of the day, regardless of species. All fish are eligible except manta rays and other protected or endangered species, supporting responsible fishing practices while keeping the competition friendly, open and engaging.
Registration and Participation
To enter, participants must pay a registration fee of $600 pesos and bring their own rod, reel, and lures for shore fishing. The first 300 registrants will receive a commemorative tournament T-shirt, offering a lasting reminder of the day’s experience.
Organizers expect strong turnout once again, with participants arriving from across the local area and from several Mexican states, including Sinaloa, Nayarit, Colima, Michoacán, and Chiapas. International anglers are also expected, as organizers aim to surpass last year’s record of 562 fishermen.
Attractive Cash Prizes
Competitors will be casting not only for bragging rights, but also for substantial rewards. Cash prizes for the heaviest catch include:
First Place: $100,000 pesos
Second Place: $30,000 pesos
Third Place: $20,000 pesos
In addition to the top prizes, all participants who do not place in the top three will automatically be entered into the traditional “Salado Raffle.” This consolation drawing includes donated prizes such as fishing lures, coolers, household items, and tickets to local nightlife venues.
Community Tradition Continues
The Surfcasting Vallarta tournament has grown into a well-loved community event that combines sport, camaraderie, and the natural beauty of the shoreline. Its continued growth reflects the strong interest in sport fishing and outdoor recreation throughout the region.
