Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – An initiative aimed at addressing the growing homelessness crisis and enhancing community safety in Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas was presented to local security authorities by the Metropolitan Alliance for Security and Commerce (AMESYC) at their August meeting.
The proposal suggests the establishment of “White Patrols,” specialized teams designed to assist homeless individuals and deter criminal activities that could harm local businesses. Drawing inspiration from the color-coding of other specialized police units in Mexico, such as those focused on violence against women (pink) or animal protection (green), the White Patrols would offer a distinctive resource for the community.
Beyond their immediate role in crime prevention and aid, the patrols would also work to foster social integration and community well-being through various programs. The initiative includes plans for a municipal regulation governing the care of homeless individuals, social reintegration programs, educational campaigns, police officer training, recreational activities, and collaboration with local organizations.
AMESYC delegates emphasized the urgent need for authorities, society, and the private sector to address the homelessness crisis, which has evolved into a significant public health concern. The alliance advocates for the establishment of specialized care facilities and suitable shelters to address the needs of the homeless population.
The proposal highlights the high cost of living in the region as a contributing factor to the increase in homelessness. Many individuals who come to Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas for work struggle to afford housing, while those who lose their jobs may turn to begging on the streets. While the community’s generosity has been invaluable in supporting these individuals, it is crucial to address the underlying issues that perpetuate their precarious situation.
